Design Basics

Week 1

APRIL 8
  • Project 1: Submission.
  • Raster vs. Vector. Examples of vector design.
  • Practice using the pen tool. Play The Béziér Game. Discussion board: Post a screenshot of the final level you completed?
  • Training: Adobe Illustrator - What is Illustrator used to create and brief look at the interface. 
  • ​Project 2: Brief introduction. 

HOMEWORK  
  • Read: Creating the perfect logo design - 12 essential steps for successfully managing logo design projects | Fabrik
  • Discussion board: Post three examples of logos, each must be a different type of logo (wordmark, letterform, emblem, pictorial mark, abstract symbol). Write a few sentences for each that describes what you like or don't like about your choices. 
APRIL 10
  • ​Discussion board: Presentations ​​
  • Project 2: Detailed introduction. 
  • Discussion: Principles of Art and Design, Logo Design Basics, mind mapping

HOMEWORK
  • Project 2: Collect Information and Analyze, Preliminaries​ - Think about your business. Complete your mind mapping and visual journal exercise.

Week 2

APRIL 15
  • Project 2: Collect Information and Analyze, Preliminaries - Post-it note thumbnails.
  • Group critique on designs. 
  • ​Training: Adobe Illustrator - Interface, Layers, Template Layer, Drawing Basic Shapes, Pathfinder, pen and curvature tool. ​​

HOMEWORK 
  • Render your three best designs using pencil and paper. One design per 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper.
  • ​Practice using Illustrator.
APRIL 16
  • Training: Adobe Illustrator - Setting up your files for Project 2.
  • Group critique on designs. 
  • Studio Practice: Project 2, Begin rendering your best design​.

HOMEWORK​
  • Project 2, Continue design
  • Post your progress to the Discussion Board before the next class.

Week 3

APRIL 22
  • Discussion: Color
  • Training: Adobe Illustrator CC: Color, Color Swatches; using Adobe Color.
  • Studio Practice:  Project 2 continue work; discussion on color variations.

HOMEWORK  
  •  Project 2: Work on color variations and finalize your designs
APRIL 24
  • In-Progress Critique: Project 2
  • Studio Practice:  Project 2 - Continue work

HOMEWORK  ​
